Murakami, Haruki. The Wind-up Bird Chronicle.

'... I happened to lose my life at one particular moment in time, and I have gone on living these forty years or more with my life lost. As a person who finds himself in such a position, I have come to think that life is a far more limited thing than those in the midst of its maelstrom realize.'

' "No name?" I said.
She smiled for the first time and gently shook her head from side to side. "I believe what you need is money. Does money have a name?"'

'I did as I was told, saying nothing. My reality seemed to have left me and was now wandering around nearby. I hope it can find me, I thought.'

'There is no need for me to close my eyes, of course, down here in the darkness, but I do it anyway. Closing the eyes has its own significance, in darkness or otherwise.'
