Stewart, Rory. The Prince of the Marshes And Other Occupational Hazards of a Year in Iraq.

The next evening, however, I was surprised to find that Dr. Amin had not yet been handed over as promised and I worried that the agreement had already collapsed. So I called the camp to make sure.

"Yes," they replied, "he walked in voluntarily to the camp with toothbrush and toothpaste eight hours ago, and we interned him and sent him to the interrogation cells in Umm Qasr."

I was enraged. This man, whom we had no reason to believe was guilty, had walked in because he had trusted my promise, witnessed by two hundred people, that I would see he was looked after.

(The book is interesting and infuriating, this passage makes me particularly sick and sad, and the pathos of the toothbrush just overwhelms me.)
