Monday linguistic raving

My favourite new word *waves hands around in dizzy excitement* is 'off-brand'; I totally stole it from The Wire. It means wannabe/lame/knock-off/low quality; i.e. competing drug crews refer to each other as off-brand to communicate disdain for inferior product or classless behaviour. There is something delicious about how elegantly, how concisely it conveys that someone/something is contemptible.

No doubt it's actually part of Baltimore slang, but I loooooove its use on the show because one of the show's themes is the extent to which individuals are betrayed by institutions; that these kids who are ground under by capitalism use the language of consumption to describe and judge their world just underlines how thoroughly it controls their lives.
